NEW SONG: "War of the Worlds"

Sunday, July 31, 2011

Here is something a little (actually a lot) different than what you would expect from me. I strove for something a little more ambient but I wanted it to tell a story. I also wanted it to sound cool. With these three objectives, I challenged myself to create my own little world with just a guitar in hand. If you can, grab some headphones for full advantage of the panning effect.

"War of the Worlds" - Dom Carnevale

It starts off with me rapidly brushing and tapping my fingers on the strings (without fretting any notes) and this sound resembles fire which should paint a apocalyptic scene of destruction as the underlying base chords come in.

The next sound you hear enter the mix is just some lightly picked notes with a univibe effect as I wanted to add another soundscape that could symbolize a radio signal playing across the waste. Then comes a high pitched part was made with a pitch shift which I controlled with my foot. This represents that there is still life in the world... Whether it be human, or not.

After this came an emulation of lazer shots which I achieved by using a flanger effect and turned up the speed all the way. This indicates an invasion of the "aliens" and it pans left and right to show fight coming from both sides. The fight then dies down and then you hear a short conversation of two survivors (which is represented by two dry guitar signals one in the left and one in the right). Now the scene would pan back out to the destruction as I introduce the "fire" again which brings the song to its close.

Gear and Equipment

Saturday, July 30, 2011

This is for any of the musicians out there. I used minimal gear when making the EP but I will humor you with what I did use...

Guitars:
Epiphone Les Paul Custom (Made in Japan not Korea)
Homemade Telecaster

I am tuned to standard for all of the songs except for "The Distant Dream" which I was tuned to Drop B for.

Pedal/Interface:
Zoom G9.2tt (All amp models and effects like the tremolo on "Life in Replay" where done on here)
Vox Satchurator (For when I wanted some organic punch)
Crybaby Wah (used for "Breaking Free" because I don't like the Zoom's wah)

Drum Software:
Addictive Drums

DAW:
Cakewalk Sonar X1 Producer

I also used stock Compressors and EQ in Sonar but occasionaly I used Waves Eddie Kramer PIE Compressor and I also used a PSP Vintage Warmer in the master chain of a couple songs
